A trick that many of us use when it comes to prepping is the idea of recycling and reusing things. It's the perfect way to go about prepping. Don't waste any resources, and don't spend so much on getting new ones. It's the ultimate double win scenario for you!
However, most of us only apply it to the items we usually think of when it comes to this, such as used survival items or old household items. It spans far more, to nearly every item you can think of.
One thing you may have never thought you could get more use out of is actually your old smartphone! Yes, we all like to upgrade them every year or two, so I have no doubts most of us have a spare old one laying around. And if you don't now you'll want to after learning these!
Smartphones have a ton of other beneficial uses you can use them for after they're done being your plain phone, so it's a good idea to keep them around for whatever you can!
Stick around all the way to the end, because we've got a life-saving wilderness smartphone tip.
So, without further ado, here are some of the best reuses for old smartphones that will really come in handy for survival or prepping:
Admittedly a lot of smart phones may not have good zoom in quality. However, if you have a good phone like an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy then you are fortunate. If you can’t afford to buy binoculars for your prepper gear then the camera zoom in functionality can be helpful.
Your phone may not have a working camera anymore, but if it does, this can be very helpful! The camera drains a lot of battery from your phone, so it'd be nice to preserve that and use something else if you don't have any binoculars on you. Hence why an old phone would be perfect because that's all you'll need to use it for.
The next one is only for those with a bit more digital information, but if you need something important stored in a jiffy, then this is definitely the tip for you. Either way, it saves the need for backups and other external hard drives.
2. File Storage
Now I would recommend putting together a binder of important documents that you can grab when you bug out. In addition to that you can also save digital copies of important documents onto your old smartphone. A lot of new smartphones today hold anywhere from 16gb to 32gb. This digital back up can be great in case you lose the binder.
You never know when you'll learn a whole lot of stuff that you'll really need once SHTF, or in any other situation. So, keep it all together and tidy with that handy tip.
Our next tip is one that's perfect for the mental side of prepping. Constantly give yourself brain food and expand your knowledge with this thoughtful use for your smartphone.
There are a lot of great books about survival on Amazon that can help.
Phones may not have too much storage for books, but if you've got a couple of old phones, you've got 5-10 books all right there! Whether it's for fun, to pass the time, learn something, or keep yourself thinking, books are incredibly useful but an unfortunate amount of weight and space. That's why it's nice to be able to transport them all so neatly and effortlessly.
Keep on heading down to learn the last few tips we've got for you. Boy, will you need #6!
4. 911 calls
Even though your phone may be old and disconnected from cell phone service you are still able to make emergency phone calls.
This one is great for those without a current working phone or one at all. As long as they've got a charge and aren't in the middle of nowhere, phones can make emergency calls no matter what. And if you need help, face a risky situation, or find yourself in the midst of a big disaster, what's a better backup than good ol' 911!
Continue below to learn the next tip, which is perfect for one of our most vulnerable times: night time! Things get a lot more dangerous once the sun goes down, but this could really help us out in a pinch.
It just so happens that there is a flashlight app that you can download on Android and Apple. This can be a great alternative until you can afford to have all the proper flashlights that you need.
If you thought the camera was bad, then you'll be flat out scared by how much a flashlight drains your phone battery. It's almost not even worth it to have on your normal phone, so it's great if you have a spare phone for you to use for this. Light is a valuable asset in the dark, and don't let battery conservation stop you from getting that help you need.
The last tip is one many of us probably haven't thought of when it comes to the phone, other than the occasional drive somewhere. It's just as handy, if not more, if you're out in the wilderness. So, discover this last tip below and complete your knowledge of all the great things an old smartphone can do for you!
Most navigation apps have offline versions that you can download to your phone. So if you are lost you can use the phone to navigate to specific areas.
Navigation on phones: so helpful. First of all, you've got all the map and direction apps you need, but there's more. You can find downloadable maps of wherever you need or take screenshots of certain routes. You can also get your camera on your phone to gather pictures of landmarks or markers placed by yourself to keep track of what you're looking for, where you're head, and where you've already been.
So, as you can tell, it's so useful to keep your old smartphones around, because they can do a whole lot for you! From storing books to helping find your way, it's still so impressive just how many uses those tiny things pack.
Still not convinced? I'll be genuinely shocked if you aren't but fear not. I've got one extra bonus tip I'll let you in on, to really hammer the nail in the coffin.
You can remove your spare smartphone’s battery, and it may short circuit the terminals, starting a fire. This is obviously a last resort, as it fries the battery and your phone, rendering them useless. But it's great if it's life or death. This fire won't be incredibly significant, but it can provide a bit of light, warmth, or even cook something small.
So there you have it, the best things you can do with any old, spare smartphone. Keep them around for future use!
