In the early days, before there were electric heaters and forced air, everyone had to be creative so that they could stay warm in chilly homes. It not only because they wanted to be comfortable, but they wanted to prevent people from getting sick. Think about it — if someone came down with the flu it could be deadly back then.
You may or may not have heard about the bedpan which was a device people utilized to fill with hot coals. They then placed it in between bed sheets to make a bed warm before bedtime. Today there are still hot bedpans in old homes near the hearth — what a site to see!
There are other ways men and women stayed warm during the cold months as well. Some were practical and some were very bizarre. It's not always an easy task to keep a house in the middle of winter warm, so our ancestors had to be creative. Luckily several of their methods can still help us on our bug out journeys today, so pay attention!
